Abstract

Total muscle proteins of the "freshwater prawn", Macrobrachium lanceifrons (Dana) collected from three areas in Laguna lake: Los Baños, Sta. Cruz and Paete, were investigated through Sodium-Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacylamide Gel Electrophoresis. A total of 21 bands were visualized in the samples from each collection site. Variations in terms of band intensities and absence of bands were observed in the samples. Possible protein band markers in every collection area were also identified. Banding patterns in each collection site were observed. For Los Baños samples, there are 19 banding patterns that were identified. For Sta. Cruz and Paete samples there are 14 and 11 banding patterns that were observed, respectively. A high similarity index which ranged from 65 to 79 % was observed within and among samples from the three collection areas. The homogeneity of the muscle protein banding patterns could be due to the absence of a physical barrier separating the freshwater prawns afar from each other. Differences among the band patterns could be attributed to environmental factors such as temperature, light, salinity, pollution and the amount of dissolved oxygen.
