Abstract

This study aimed to compare two common Sphagnum species-Sphagnum junghuhnianum Doz & Molk. and Sphagnum cuspidatulum C. Muell. Detailed taxonomic descriptions of the two species were made. Differences in morphological and anatomical features of the branch leaf stem leaf, main stem and branch stem between the two species were noted. A key was constructed to facilitate the identification of the specimens. Sphagnum junghuhnianum and Sphagnum cuspidatulum were observed to have a wide ditribution in Asia. However, in the Philippines, S. cuspidatulum has a limited distribution compared to S. junghuhnianum. S. junghuhnianum and 5 cuspidatulum were recently collected at Sierra Madre and Mt. Kitanglad, respectively. The red pigment recovered from both species have different Rf values but both were higher than the Rf of sphagnorubin A, B and C. It could be inferred that both pigments are different from the known sphagnorubins.
