Abstract

Abstract: The study was conducted for three months at Daily Harvest Farm in Brgy. Gaya-Gaya, San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan to determine the manpower requirement and dynamics at the farrowing section. The socio/demographic-economic profile of caretakers in the farrowing section was identified. Farm's overall labor force were determined and classified based on animal-related working hours and non-animal-related working hours. Sow-centered activities were categorized, identified, and quantified as well as for the litter management practices. The activities performed were all timed and average values with standard deviation were determined. The time per animal basis, sow's and litter's time, was calculated to arise with the manpower requirement of the farm in the farrowing section. The maximum time to wean a sow was 28,246.13 seconds (7.85 hours) and the maximum time to wean a litter was 3,066 seconds (0.85 hours). It was found out that the total hours rendered by the farm personnel per cycle (5,162.5 hours) exceeded the total hours required to finish a 35-day cycle in the section (3,182.82 hours) by 1,979.68 hours per cycle. It shows that reallocation of five personnel from the farrowing section to the other section of the farm that needs manpower may be done to maximize the cost in production in hired labor.
