Abstract

Blood samples from thirty tilapia obtained from Binangonan, Rizal (freshwater habitat) were compared to blood samples from thirty tilapia reared in Bay, Laguna (brackishwator habitat), through polyaculamide disc gel electrophoresis. They were compared in terms of the effect of different environments on the isohemoglobins found. The results showed that hemolysates of the fish from Dinangonan showed multiple isohemoglobins with heterogenous banding pattern with band number ranging from three 'Left In contrast, hemolysates of the fish from Bay, Laguna showed multiple isohemoglobins with a more uniform pattern where band number ranged from one to five only. The occurrence of cathodal and anode) bands in both population was hypothesized to aid the fishes in their fast adaptation to their respective environments.
