Abstract

ABSTRACT ESPINOSA, MELANIE V., 1982. "Further Studies on the In Vitro Culturing of Human Red Blood Cells in Coconut Water Media." An undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of ''science in Biology, under Dr. Willian)G. Padolina, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, second semester, 1981-1982, In vitro culturing of human red blood cells at 4°C was significantly lower in coconut water, extracted from 6 month-old drupes, at all points compared to RPHI 1640 basing on percent, viability using trypan blue dye exclusion as viability index. Significant decrease in percent viability was observed with prolonged period of culturing. Replacement of medium significantly increases percent viability, although coconut water can maintain human red blood cells at a 15 day period, results point to its inferiority as a culture medium for human red blood cells compared to RPNI 1640.
