Abstract

The chromosome number. meiotic behavior and pollen fertility of three accessions of Vigna marina Merr. namely, 122-5-L, 123-6-D and 123-6-D were studied. The chromosome number, meiotic behavior as well as chromosomal aberrations observed were found to be similar in all of the three accessions. The normal chromosomes number was found to be 2,22. The most frequently observed abnormalities were reduced chromes.. number (2h=20) in diakinesis; early disjunction, laggards and noncongression in metaphase; and late disjunction, laggards, bridges and asynchronous separation in anaphase. NC aberration was observed in telophase I and II. Pachytene analysis reveals that the chromosomes of Acc. 122- and 123-6-L can be categorized as either metacentric or submetacentric while those of Acc. 123-6-L can be classified as either metacentric, submetacentric or subtelacentric. Though there is a high frequency of abnormalities present, the high frequency of bivalent formation and normal telophase I and II cells explained the high percent pollen fertility obtained.
