Abstract
ABSTRACT Evangelista, Karen V , University of the Philippines Los Banos, Bachelor of Science in Biology, March 1998 ROOT GROWTH RESPONSES OF MUNGBEAN ( I igna radial(' L. var. Pag-asa I) TO CADMIUM AND LEAD. Adviser Dr Nina M Cadiz Seven-day old mungbean plants (rigna radium L var Pag-asa I) were grown in Hoaglands solution without phosphorous and treated with 0, 0 1, 0 5, 1 0, and 5.0 uM concentrations of two heavy metals cadmium (as Cd(NO3)2) and lead (as Pb(NO3)2) After seven days, various root growth characteristics were determined Results showed that increasing the concentrations of both metals caused a decrease in root dry weight by 62% and 85% of the control at 5.0 uM cadmium and lead, respectively Likewise, a decline in root length (73% and 67% of the control) and root meristem length (57% and 48% of the control) at 5.0 uM cadmium and lead were observed This metal-induced inhibition of root growth was accompanied by an increase in root meristem width by 760/0 and 77% of the control at 5.0 uM cadmium and lead, respectively Cells of cadmium and lead treated plants, which resulted in shorter root and meristem growth, did not divide This was supported by the marked reduction in mitotic index as the concentration of the metal increased At the highest metal concentration (5.0 uM cadmium and lead reduced the mitotic index by 78% and 66% of the control. respectively. Cell division therefore, is needed in root extension. The relative sensitivity of mungbean to cadmium than lead shows that the degree of tolerance of this plant is metal-specific.
