Abstract

EXCONDE, NIELA CECILLE G. UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES AT LOS BAROS, OCTOBER, 1990. "CYTOLOGY OF RICE MEALYBUG, Pseudococcus saccharicola (Takahashi) (HEMIPTERA: PSEUDOCOCCIDAE)", an undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology (Cell Biology). College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. Adviser : Dr. Adelina A. Barrion Lacto-aceto-orcein squash technique was employed to egg cells of female rice mealybug, Pseudococcus saccharicola (Takahashi). Egg cells of P. saccharicola revealed the nuclear and chromosomal changes during the different stages of reductional and equational meiotic divisions. Meiotic index of P. saccharicola was 52.6% showing more dividing than non-dividing cells. Idiogram of pachytene chromosomes revealed the actual, length. ranging from 15.3 to 50.9 mm. with relative length ranging from 0.031 to 0.105. The sex chromosome, being the shortest and heterochromatic, had an odd C-shape appearance. There were 18 bivalent chromosomes at diakinesis or n=17IIA + X. Heterochromatization of chromosomes was a unique feature of P. saccharicola.
