Abstract
VIRGINIA 0. FIGUEROA, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, November, 1981. Frequency of Consanguineous Marriages in Barangays San Anton and San Marcos, San Pablo City, Philippines. Adviser: Mrs. Rita P. Laude. Two hundred couples from Barangay San Marcos (rural) and two hundred fifty couples from Barangay San Anton (urban) were chosen randomly and interviewed personally. A total of twenty two consanguineous marriages from the two barangays was observed (four from Barangay San Anton and eighteen from Barangay San Marcos). The inbreeding coefficient for Baran-gay San Anton is 0.0001093, while that for Barangay San Marcos is 0.000718. Genetic and socio-economic factors affecting consanguinity were discussed. Abnormalities of the progenies were significantly detected from consanguineous marriages. AO significant difference in the other genetic correlates were observed. On the other hand, it was observed that consanguineous couples do marry at an early age and belong to the lower income bracket.
