Abstract

GABRIEL, SARAH SHARMAINE TENORIO. 2011. University of the Philippines Los Banos. ASSOCIATIONS OF SOME EASILY DETECTABLE GENETIC TRAITS AND DISORDERS OBSERVED IN SELECTED UPLB STUDENTS Adviser: Dr. Merlyn S. Mendioro ABSTRACT Through statistical analyses of observed phenotypes, associations among 31 genetic traits and disorders were obtained. Secondary data were retrieved from a survey conducted in 579 BIO 30 (Genetics) students who performed self-evaluation to check for phenotypes. Analysis of association also included sex, blood type, and final grade in BlO 30 as variables. Some genetic disorders were observed to have low frequency counts. Among 579 BIO 30 students, there was only one occurrence of polydactyly and of club foot, two each for brachydactyly and syndactyly, and none for albinism and arachnodactyly. Chi-square test of independence along with Fisher exact test for those that did not pass the assumption of the chi-square test confirmed various pairings of associated traits and disorders from the 1,122 pairwise combinations. Less than 0.05 (<0.05) p-values accepted the alternative hypothesis that there is an association between two traits/disorders. No association was found in albinism, polydactyly, syndactyly, myopia, brachydactyly, and arachnodactyly. Associations confirmed by the Chi-square test of independence were provided with qualitative interpretations in which most had very weak relationships with values of coefficients ranging from 0.01 5 0.20. Only two associated pairs had higher level of relationship; sex and ability to move ears with a weak relationship (0= 0.2168), and ear pits and hithchiker's thumb with a very strong relationship (0= 0.8910). Possible genetic explanations on how the associations occurred were discussed.
