Abstract
The rice cultivars IR24 and TN1 representing resistant and susceptible to tungro virus respectively, were used to determine differences in grain and seedling growth characteristics. Better seedling growth was observed in IR42 than TN1. This was shown by higher fresh dry weight of both shoots and roots in IR42. the longer root meristem coupled with higher values of mitotic index in the resistant cultivar was also observed to be highly significant than that of the susceptible one. On the other hand, analysis of higher grain 1-amylase level was shown by IR42 was compared with TN1. The above results suggest that the higher grain a-amylase level and greater meristematic activity of the root meristem found in the resistant cultivar might be the character responsible for the tungro resistance in rice.
