Abstract

Human peripheral leucocytes maintained at 37o in several dilutions of Hank's Basal Salt Solution and coconut water fortified with AB serum, within a four-day period. the number of the live cells were counted daily based on the criteria of cytological integrity and dye-exclusion tests. The percentage of viable cells in coconut water was significantly higher than those in six other media indicating the relative efficiency of coconut water over the others, in maintaining leucocytes. Except for two media, (III and IV), all treatment differences were significant. the possible reason for the behavior of leucocytes in culture were explained, based on a theoretical comparison of the chemical composition of coconut water Eagle's minimum essential medium.
