Abstract
GARGUERA, LEAH ROSE C. University of the Philippines at Los Banos, May, ly8b. Cytological Variations Between Two Ecotypes of Rottboellia exaltata L.f. Tribe Andro-pogoneae, Family Gramineae). Adviser: Dr. Liwayway M. Engle Co-adviser: Mrs. Merlyn Mendioro
Gametic chromosome number and meiotic behavior of two ecotypes (Ecotype 1 and 3) of Rottboellia exaltata were studied using the modified iron-acetocarmine technique. Results showed that the gametic chromosome number of R. exaltata is n - 10. There were differences in the chromosome behavior of the two ecotypes. Ecotype 1 showed normal meiosis. Ecotype 3 had some cells that showed abnormal meiotic behavior. Abnormalities seen were terminal and segmental loose pairings in pachynema, quadrivalents and univalents in diakinesis and metaphase I, late migrating and precociously disjoining chromosomes in metaphase I and laggards in anaphase I. The differences in meiotic behavior of the two ecotypes were related to their differences in morpho-logical and developmental characteristics.
