Aerial root tips of the "devil's , ivy" (Marble Queen), Scilndapsus aureus Engl. at interphase and normal mitosis were investigated. Root tip cells for karyotype analysis were pre-treated with a solution of colchicine, 8-hydroxyquinoline and DMSO at 5 and it a.m. or p.m. for 5 hours prior to harvest and fixing. Cell and nuclear diameter at interphase were 43.30 and 27.29 u, respectively. Cell volume at interphase was 42,900.63 u3 with nuclear volume of 10,689.24 u3, and nucleoplasmic index of 0.26. Mitotic stages observed include prophase, metaphase, early and middle anaphase, and telophase. Mitotic index was 97.97%. Normal chromosome number in somatic cells was 56 (n = 28). Simple statistical data on chromosome lengths and centromere positions enabled the chromosomes to be recognized individually and classified into twelve groups according to length, and four types based on centromere position. The total relative length was 311.36 u, with mean relative chromosome length of 5.56 u. The shortest chromosome in the genome measured more than 3 u, while the longest was than 10 u.
