Abstract

ABSTRACT GUCE, URSELA P. 1980. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. The Cytology of Syzygium 'ambos (L.) Alston, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels and Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. and Perr. Advisers: Dr. DOLORES A. RAMIREZ and Miss VIOLETA N. VILLEGAS The study revealed that the chromosome numbers of S. jambos (L.) Alston, seeded S. cumini (L.) Skeels, seedless S. cumini (L.) Skeels and S. samarangense (Blume) Merr. and Perr. are 2n = 48, = 44, 2n = 55, and 2n = 44, respectively. The karyotypes of these species are symmetrical and most chromosomes have subterminal centromeres. The somatic chromosomes are generally small, their lengths range from 0.62 - 2.5 p. The species exhibited aberrant chromosome behavior at meiosis I and II. Univalents, bivalents and secondary association among them were observed. Metaphase I was characterized by stickiness, while anaphase had laggards, multiple bridges and single bridge with fragment. Micronuclei were formed at telophase 1.
