ABSTRACT HABACON, TEOFILA JUDITH BALDEO, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. June, 1992. HEMOCYTES OF SWEET POTATO WEEVIL, Cylas formicarius Fabr. (Coleoptera:Curculionidae).

The different types of hemocytes present in the hemolymph from the prothoracic legs of 20 male and 20 female sweet potato weevil, C. formicarius Fabr., were determined employing the squash technique, staining with Wright's stain and fixation through air drying. The hemocyte types were identified according to the stain absorbing ability of the cells and was confirmed by the system of Gupta (1979). The four hemocyte types of C. formicarius were granulocytes(GR), coagulocytes(C0), prohemocytes(PR) and plasmatocytes (PL). These cell types varied in terms of size, shape, and frequency of occurence. Statistical analysis It-test) revealed that there was significant difference in the counts of spherical GRs, irregular GRs and PLs while no significant difference was obtained in the counts of COs and PRs between male and female C. formicarius. The mean sizes of all hemocyte types except PLs were significantly different between males and females. The total hemocyte count of males and females were significantly different from each other. In both sexes, the most dominant form was GR which exhibited spherical, elongated and irregular shapes in males while in females, only spherical and irregularly shaped GR were observed. In males, GRs were followed by spherical COs, spherical PRs, and spherical and spindle-shaped PLs. In females, the next dominant hemocyte was spherical COs, spherical PLs ( some with extended pseudopodia) and spherical PRs. The total hemocyte count revealed that higher amount of hemocytes was present in female hemolymph but the males showed significantly larger cell measurements than the females.
