Abstract
ICALLA, LEAH-MEL DENNESA B. University of the Philippines at Los Barbs. June 1998. AN EXAMINATION OF ALGAL SPECIES IN THE PERIPHYTON AND GUT OF TILAPIA (Oreochromis niloticus Linn.) CAUGHT IN LAGUNA DE BAY. Adviser Dr. Macrina T Zafaralla
ABSTRACT
Algae in the periphytic communities of Putatan area in Laguna de Bay during February and May 1997 consisted of species from three algal groups, namely, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, and Chrysophyta with two, eight, and fourteen species, respectively Among these, C. glomerata generally predominated, followed by Navicula sp. and Fragilaria sp. The gut of tilapia caught in the open waters of the same locality contained algae from three divisions, namely; Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Chrysophyta. There were seven blue-greens, six greens, and seven diatoms. These algae inside the fish gut were found in varied stages of degradation. The species that remained intact were Coscmodiscus, Cyclotella, Melosira, Gyrosigma, Scenedesmus, and Myxosarclna. BOD levels in the lake waters of Brgy. Putatan, Muntinlupa City indicate that the latter met the water quality standards for Class C water reservoirs during the time of the study. BOD values did not vary among stations but significantly varied with time.
