Pollen germination (PG) and pollen tube growth (PTG) were examined to investigate self-incompatibility in several yellow passion fruit lines. Controlled self-pollination was done and fruit set was evaluated 5 days after pollination. Self-pollination generally resulted in poor fruit set. Lines DMPI, 4-10, B6-1..and Al2-4 set fruits but only DMPI was considered to be partially self-compatible with 20.59% fruit set. The other lines were considered self-incompatible. These self-incompatible lines, however, readily set fruits when cross-pollinated with the other lines. Spontaneous abortion which is a post-zygotic incompatibility mechanism was observed when line No. 16 was self-pollinated. Ovary enlargement index (OEI) was computed to be 19.657%. Line 16 had 0% fruit set but self-fertilization had been established to occur. Pollen tube penetration through the style was observed 6 hours after self-pollination. Line 14-11 OP self-pollinated flowers fixed at 2, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours after pollination showed mean PG of 33.33%, 32.13%, 33.17%, 50.49% and 32.45%, respectively. No pollen penetration into the stylar region was observed. There was pollen tube disruption and slow pollen tube elongation: indications of pre-zygotic incompatibility mechanisms. In contrast, PG and pollen tube penetration into the stylar region of compatible crosses as early as 3.5 hours after cross-pollination was noted.
