Abstract

ABSTRACT JAYOMA, MIGUELITO SALAS, University of the Philippines at Los BaRos, B.S. Biology. -Cytology and Embryo Sac Development of Manila Palm [Veitchia merrillii (Becc.) H.E. Moore, Arecaceae/Palmae].

ADVISER: Dr. William Sm. Gruezo

Chromosome number, behavior and embryo sac development in young ovules of V. merrillii were studied. Chromosome number was 2n = 23. Infrequent number of 2n = 26 and 24 were also observed. In general meiotic chromosome behavior is normal, except for some laggards at anaphase I and II which were due to delayed disjunction of late-aligning bivalents at metaphase. Pollen viability and fertility of V. merrillii was 96.7% . The embryo sac development of V. merrillii was that of somatic apospory type which is a mode of apomixis in angiosperms. In the developmental process, somatic cells enlarges, vacuolated and a series of karyokinetic divisions forms the eight nucleate embryo sac. However, nuclei formed have an unreduced genome.
