ABSTRACT Nine populations of Korean rice (Oryza saliva L.) were assessed for their genetic variability and were identified for the possible occurrence of mislabeling and probable duplicates among them using eight SSR markers. Diversity within and between groups were assessed by computing the heterozygosity and PIC values, respectively. DNA fingerprinting revealed a total of 70 alleles, with a mean of 9.50. Sizes ranged from 78bp (RM271) to 298bp (RM124). Sixty-four out of the 70 alleles (91.43%) was observed to exhibit polymorphism with RM152 being the most polymorphic marker (PIC= 0.8570) and RM237 (PIC= 0.4298), the least. Populations belonging to the same variety tend to be more similar with each other. Computed PIC value of 0.7167 for these samples of Korean rice indicates a high allelic diversity. Heterozygosity value for these populations (0.2977) indicated a low diversity within the group. Putative incidences of mislabeled individuals and duplicates have been detected as some of the constituent members of "suk na," and "san du do" varieties clustered with different groups on which they should not ideally group with. "Suk na" and "koryeong 8" were considered to be potential duplicates. Further analysis should still be considered to verify these cases of probable duplications and mislabeling.
