Abstract

MA. LEWILYNN B. LUKMAN. University of the Philippines, Los Banos. B.S. Biology. April 1993. Preliminary cytological study of 0. meridionalis Ng, 0. rufipogon griff. 0. sativa L. and their F1 hybrids.

Adviser: Prof. Genoveva C. Loresto

Two forms of 0. meridionalis from Australia , the annual and the perennial, were crossed to two Asian rices, 0. rufipogon and 0. sativa to determine their chromosomal affinities. A wide range of pollen sterility was observed in the cross of 0. meridionalis (annual) with 0. rufipogon and 0. sativa while partially fertile to fertile pollens were observed in the Fl hybrids of 0. meridionalis (perennial) x 0. rufipogon, indicating that the perennial type is more closely related to 0. rufipogon while the annual form is distantly related to both 0. rufipogon and 0. sativa. Meiotic behavior was essentially normal in both parents and the F1 hybrids. Very low frequency of chromosomal abnormalities such as loose pairing in pachytene and univalents in diakinesis were observed in the hybrids. The occurrence of high chromosomal affinities is insufficient to account for high pollen sterility in the hybrids. In this study the annual and perennial forms of O. meridionalis cannot be cytologically differentiated from O. rufipogon and O. sativa.
