Abstract

MAGBANUA, MARY GRACE M. 1986. Cytology of the Rice Bug. Leptocorisa oratorius (Fabricius) (Hemiptora: Alydidae). An undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology (Cell Biology). College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines at Los Banos.

The rice bug, Leptocorisa oratorius (Fab) was investigated cytologically. The testicular cells were used to observe am describe the meiotic stages of cell division. At diakinesis the chromosome number was determined to be n = 7 II + X0, Pachytene analysis showed that the chromosome length ranged from 13 mm to 28 mm, the sex chromosome being the shortest while the nucleolar chromosome was the longest. Relative length of the chromosome were calculated and showed the same trend as in the actual chromosome length. The meiotic index revealed that there were more dividing cells than non dividing cells.
