Abstract

The artificial diet formulation at IRRI for use in YSB rearing was used to study the life history of the insect and its response to Bacillus thuringiensis (B. t.) endotoxins and strain formulations. Results of the developments study show slow growth and no pupation of the insect. But since the survival rate was respectively high given up to the fourths day, the diet was thus used for B. t. bioassay where the insect showed differences in response to selected endotoxins and strain formulations. The component for faster growth and pupation still needs to be found. It is suggested that further studies should be conducted us to the important components needed to perfect the diet for mass rearing. However, for toxicology studies, the diet is highly useful.
