Abstract

Enrico S. Manalansan Jr., University of the Philippines at Los Banos, March 1985. The Cytogenetic Effect of Water Polluted with Factory Effluents on the Somatic Cells of Allium cepa and Pollen Mother Cells of Zea mays. Root tip cells of onion (Allium cepa) and pollen mother cells of corn (Zea mays) were treated with water polluted with factory effluents at different concentrations (0, 15%, 50% and 100V. Treatment of onion somatic cells resulted in a decrease In mitotic index and significant frequencies of aberrations such as fragments, bridges, laggards, C-metaphase, micronuclei and binucleolar formation. Treatment time (3 hr vs 12 hr) was insignificant. In meiocytes of corn, the total frequency of abnormalities is significantly affected by the treatment. Aberrations observed include univalents, precocious chromosomes, laggards and micronuclei. The probable implications of the observed results were discussed.
