Abstract

MYLENE MANALO MANALO. UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES AT LOS BANOS. MARCH, 1986. HEMOCYTE STUDY ON THE MALE AND FEMALE WHITEBACKED PLANTHOPPER SOGATELLA FURCIFERA (HORVATH) r(HOMOPTERA: DELPHACIDAE). ADVISER: DR. LIWAYWAY M. ENGLE The hemocytes of newly emerged males and females of Sogatella furcifera or the whitebacked planthopper were studied by squash technique using Giemsa's stain. The cellular characteristics, size, shape, and frequency of the cells were observed. The hemocytes observed were classified according to the system of Gupta (1966) and only one form was identified, that is the granulocyte. The granulocytes of female whitebacked planthopper had a larger size than the males. The females likewise had a greater number of cells than the males. There was no significant difference in their appearance.
