Abstract

Thirty milkfish of approximately the same size and weight, fifteen from the brackish water ponds of Malabon, Rizal and fifteen from the fresh water lake, Laguna de ,:ay were individually examined for their electrophoretic hemoglobin patterns. Both electrophoretic analyses snowed multiple hemoglobin of four to ten bands. How-ever, the fresh water hemolysates showed multiple hemoglobin which were complex and heterogeneous while the brackish water samples showed a uniform electrophoretic pattern of seven bands. The electrophoretic heterogeneity and multiplicity observed in milkfish might have been an adaptive strategy of milkfish to meet the large environmental variations encountered by the organism.
