Abstract
Water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, from different areas of Laguna de Bay were studied. Root tips were used as the source of chromosome to establish chromosome number and chromosome classification. The types of chromosomes were designated as Class A; long pairs of metacentric chromosomes. Class B, medium sized metacentric and acro-centric chromosomes. Class C, small sized telocentric and acrocentric chromosomes. This study revealed that the diploid number of chromosomes of E. crassipes was 32. Three c-metaphases cells from Calamba, Bay and Mayondon were studied for classification. Chromosome abnormalities were observed in meiosis and mitosis, attributed to effluents that enter the lake. Highest frequency of aberration was from Calamba, followed by Bay then, Mayondon.
