Abstract
The effect of cadmium on the gross morphology and leaf anatomy of rice and corn were studied. three treatments were conducted, namely; 0% CdC12, 5 x 10-3% CdC12, and 5 x 10-4% CdC12. the control was replicated six times while the other two treatments had eight replicates each. At 5 x 10-4% CdC1 chlorosis was evident on the leaves of both crops a day after the treatment. The symptoms intensified as the exposure to sadmium lengthened. Yellow spots appeared in rice leaves three days after the application of 5 x -3% CdC12. However, the corn plants seemed as healthy as the control. Cadmium also caused growth retardation in both crops as shown by the significant growth retardation in both crops as shown at the significant decrease in plant height, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root, number of leaves per plant, and length and width of leaves. For rice leaf anatomy, there was a decrease in the leaf thickness, thickness of the upper and lower epidermis diameter of bulliform cells, and length of trichomers. However, there was an increase in the mesophyll thickness, diameter of vascular bundle, and diameter of bundle sheat cells. for the leaf anatomy of corn, there was a decrease in either thickness or diameter of all the tissues/cells measured accept for the thickness of the mesophyll layer.
