Abstract
The giemsa banding technique was applied the mitotic chromosomes of tea mays (IPB var 1), Zeii diploperennis (Acc. 167) and their crosses (F1, BC1, and BC2) obtained from the root cells. Bands were produced on the chromosomes of the five population, and banding patterns were established. A comparison of the karyotype of five ce7' revealed that their chromosomes were similar in terms of chromosome length and centromeric position. Their banding patterns, however varied. Maize showed bands which were mostly intercalary while diploid teosinte showed bands which were mostly terminal In the F1, it was observed that the diploid teosinte chromosomes and/or chromosome segments appeared in chromosomes 1,2,4,5,7,8,9 and 10 while maize chromosomes appeared in all pairs. In BC1, teosinte chromosomes and/or chromosome segment(s) were located on chromosome 2,4,5 and 10 while in BC2, they reappeared on chromosome 3,5 and 8
