Abstract

Two accessions of the backcross of Saccharum officinarum x Saccharum spontaneum were studied. Chromosome number and ::heir meiotic behavior were determined and comparisons with the F1 parent and the Saccharum officinarum parent were made. The study showed that chromosome number for the two accessions is 2n=104, an n + n transmission. Chromosome mosaics were observed with 2n.102, 106 and 108. Diakinesis cells showed the high frequency of bivalents and a low frequency of multivalents and univalents. The low frequency of multivalents indicates autosyndetic pairing in the back-cross. Different abnormalities were observed. Non-congcross of chromosomes at Metaphase I was seen. Spindle abnormalities were also seen like multiple spindles. During Anaphase I and Telophase I laggards were observed however there were no bridges. These were also observed during Meiosis II.
