Gregorio ABSTRACT Thirty genotypes of rice (Oryza saliva L.) were grown and evaluated for reproductive stage salinity tolerance and characterized morphologically and molecularly using microsatellite markers. As salt concentration was increased (60 to 100 mM), culm length, panicle length, number of spikelets on main rachilla of the panicle, number of panicles, number of filled seeds, total seeds, biomass, total biomass, and yield decreased. Statistical analysis using ANOVA and correlation analysis between morphological and molecular traits showed significance. Cluster analysis and Maximum Agreement Sub-Trees (MAST) showed that Kala-rata was not very similar to the other genotypes. Tolerant varieties, Pokkali and Cheriviruppu, gave the highest yield even under 100 mM. Yield was measured by considering the weight of all the panicles. Molecular characterization using SSR markers showed that Pokkali, Cheriviruppu and Bhirpala, which are native tolerant varieties, were clustered into one group. Kinandang Patong, Mojang Kor, and Kala-rata, which are susceptible native varieties, were clustered together. Pokkali and Cheriviruppu were shown to be the most tolerant genotypes while IR29 and Bao Thai were the most susceptible.
