Abstract

Mendoza, Jose Roseller M. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. March 1989. A STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF MATERNAL AGE THIRTY YEARS OLD AND ABOVE-ON THE SEX OF THE OFFSPRING IN NORMAL AND MONGOLOID LIVE BIRTHS IN LAGUNA.

Adviser: Mrs. Merlyn S. Mendioro

Samples of 1,141 male and female live births born of mothers aged 30 years old and above which consisted of normal and mongoloid infants were collected from seven selected hospitals in Laguna. The frequency of occurrence of males in relation to maternal age was studied. Statistical test on the normal infants showed a significant increase in the percentage of male births with maternal age at the 5% level of confidence. The percentage of male births was highest at the age of 40 years old and above age bracket particularly at the age bracket of 50 - 54 where the percentage of male birth was 100%. Four mongoloid cases were obtained from the study consisting three males and one female. Results obtained were parallel with those of the normal, however, the small sample size (0.35% of the total population studied) did not permit statistical testing and the establishment of a conclusive statement from the data.
