Abstract

MENDOZA, KRIS IAN BALDONADO. 2006. KARYOTYPE OF THE BRAIN CHROMOSOMES OF THE MANGO TWIG CUTTER Niphonoclea capito (PASCOE) (COLEOPTERA: CERAMBYCIDAE) SAMPLED FROM NILASIN 2ND, PURA, TARLAC. University of the Philippines Los Banos. B.S. Biology Major in Genetics Major adviser: Dr. Adelina A. Barrion ABSTRACT Chromosome number, size, morphology, behavior and mitotic index were determined in the ganglia' cells of the larvae of the mango twig cutter, Niphonoclea capito (Pascoe) using lacto-aceto-orcein squash preparations. The diploid chromosome number observed was 2n=10. The chromosomes had a relative length of 0.067 to 0.157 and an average length of 0.7 to 1.6p with diffused centromere and of holocentric type. Interphase and the different mitotic stages, namely: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase were normal. Six Prophase substage nuclei were observed and distinguished based on the shapes and sizes of the nuclei and the staining ability of the chromatin content. The most frequent Prophase substage is Substage 1. The karyotypic features of N. capito together with the morphological characteristics of the species would be useful in the identification of the mango twig cutter. The brain cells showed an active cell division with a mitotic index of 62%.
