Abstract

Four rice varieties and a wheat cultivar were inoculated with Frankia BIRS1, a nitrogen-fixing actinomycete. The capability of Frankia to fix nitrogen in the roots of rice and wheat seedlings were tested by acetylene reduction assay (ARA). The results showed significant differences between inoculated and uninoculated seedlings. The difference is due to the ability of Frankia to fix nitrogen in the roots of wheat and Elon-elon variety. Frankia inoculated in rice varieties Asucena and Palawan showed its capability to fix nitrogen in the roots of the rice seedlings but the levels were not statistically different. Rice varieties Dinorado and Genaban-on showed no significant difference in ARA between the inoculated and uninoculated seedlings. Wheat was also planted in non-sterile soil and tested if Frankia was occurring in the roots. Results showed positive presence of Frankia in the rhisosphere, rhipoplane and histosphere region of the roots.
