Abstract
Starch-gel electrophoresis was utilized to determine the protein polymorphisms in the 80-head population of mallard ducks (Anus playrhynchas Linn ) sampled from Victoria, Laguna. From the total samples, 40 each from female and male ducks, blood plasma were obtained and analyzed for the banding patterns of three (3) enzymes, namely: acid phosphatase (ACPH), alkaline phosphatase (ALPH), and esterase (EST), and two blood proteins, namely transferrin (Trf) and albumin (ALB). Except for ALB, which was monomorphic or with only one (1) locus, all four (4) protein systems were polymorphic, showing multiple loci. ACPH was observed to have four (4) isoloci, designated as ACPH-1, ACPH-2, ACPH-3, and ACPH-4. Three (3) isoloci were observed for ALPH, namely: ALPH-1, ALPH-2, and ALPH-3. The four (4) EST isozymes observed were denoted EST-I, EST-2, EST-3, and EST-4. The three (3) Trf isoloci observed were designated as Trf-1, Trf-2, and Trf-3. Two codominant alleles, S (slow) and F (fast), were observed to control the genotypes of the population such as S/S, S/F, and F/F. A third allele M (medium) was observed to code for EST-2 genotypes in the males such as S/M, M/F, and S/M/F. The estimated lowest genotype frequency was 0.0588 in the female and 0.0385 in the male while the highest was 1.0 for each The estimated gene frequencies in the females and males ranged from 0.1667 to 1 0 and from 0.1347 to 1.0, respectively. The estimated genotype frequencies for the combined female and male ranged from 0.0789 to 1.0. The range of the gene frequency for the combined estimation was from 0.0816 to 1.0. The computed degrees of polymorphism for the female and male were 0.7333 and 0.7143, respectively, while the mean heterozygosity was 0.3005 and 0.2994. The degree of polymorphism and mean heterozygosity in the combined observations were 0.8 and 0.3466, respectively.
