Abstract
OANE, RAQUEL OCFEMIA. 2004. Cytogenetics of Two Breeds (Pateros and Khaki Campbell) of Mallard duck (Anas platyrynchos L.). University of the Philippines Los Banos. B.S. Biology major in Genetics. Major Adviser: Dr. Adelina A. Barrion The chromosome number and meiotic division of two breeds of mallard duck (Anas platyrynchos L.), the Pateros and the Khaki Campbell were investigated using the smear preparation method. Testicular tissues were obtained from five sexually matured drakes of the two breeds. Sequential stages of meiotic division, namely Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase 1, Telophase L Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II and Telophase II were observed and described. The meiotic index of the Pateros breed of mallard duck (59.306%) was higher than that of the Khaki Campbell breed (57.996%), however, the differences is insignificant. Diploid chromosome number (2n) of both Pateros and Khaki Campbell breeds is 2n=16. The mean relative length of pachytene chromosomes ranged from 0.624 to 0. 0626 for Pateros and 0. 0625 to 0.0630 for Khaki Campbell. Pateros and Khaki Campbell breeds were cytogenetically similar.
