Abstract

Twenty-four milkfish hemoglobin samples of which twelve were taken from fish reared in aquaria and the other twelve '.ken from fish reared in Laguna de Bay were analyzed through polyacrelamide disc gel electrophoresis. Those reared in aquaria showed four to five hemoglobin bands while those from Laguna de Bay exhibited five to eight bands. Although both samples showed hemoglobin multiplicity, those reared in the freshwater lake were found to be more complex and heterogeneous compared to those reared in a more controlled environment. The presence of anodal hands in all the milkfish samples reared in Laguna de Bay was assumed to be an adaptation to the low oxygen tension in this particular habitat.
