Abstract
KENNETH C. OPORTO. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. Bachelor of Science in Biology. November 1992. HEMATOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF EGGPLANT FRUIT AND SHOOT BORER, Leucinodes orbonalis GUENEE.

Hematological analysis of eggplant fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonolis Guenee showed that the blood volume was 0.038 cc. Coagulation time was 8 minutes. Analysis also showed the presence of six types of hemocytes. Oval and fusiform plasmatocytes were the most dominant hemocytes with an average frequency of 74 and 72 percent in unfixed and in fixed preparations respectively. Fusiform plasmocytes were either small (28.19 pm) or large (35.06 pm). Oval plasmatocytes wore grouped into large(21.31 pm), medium(14.44 pm), and small(11 jam) . Oval prohemocyte counts were 14 and 13 in unfixed and fixed preparations, respectively. They occurred in three different sizes; large(9.82 pm), medium(7.45 pm), and small(5.08 pm). Oval granulocytes and spherulocytes occurred simultaneously, and exhibited relatively close frequencies at 5 and 5 in unfixed preparations and 5 and 7 in fixed preparations, respectively. Granulocytes occurred as large(20.50 pm), medium(17.50 pm), or small(14.50 pm). Spherulocytes had an average diameter of 16.25 pm. Coagulocytes and adipocytes had the least frequencies at 2 and 1 in unfixed preparations and 2 and 1 in fixed preparations, respectively. Diameter of small-sized coagulocytes was 15.38 pm while the large cell measured 16.13um. The large adipocytes measured 16.00 um and the small-sized ones measured 14.00 um. Variations in the relative frequencies of the different types of hemocytes in fixed and unfixed preparations were attributed to the stability of each type and the occurrence of intermediate forms of hemocytes. Total hemocytes ranged from 21,920 to 31,120 cells per mm2.
