Abstract

PANDY, MARY ANNE B. University of the Philippines Los Banos. March 2001. Cytogenetic Effects of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Extract on Human Leukocytes Cultured in vitro. Undergraduate Thesis. B.S. Biology (Genetics). ADVISER: Merlyn S. Mendioro From five male donors of ages 20 to 23, four to five drops of blood were extracted and cultured in vitro, incubated at 37 °C for 48 hours, treated with different garlic (Album Rimier, L.) concentrations (0, 1%, 3%, 5%) and cultured again for another 24 hrs. Results showed an insignificant effect of garlic concentrations on the cell division. Mean mitotic indices of 0.097, 0.107, 0.100 and 0.079 were observed in the control, 1%, 3% and 5%, respectively. Also, the treatment showed an insignificant effect of the treatments to induce chromosomal aberrations which include gaps, breaks and loose sister chromatids. Mean frequencies observed for chromosome condensation were 0.112 (0%), 0.140 (1%), 0.184 (3%) and 0.164 (5%) and statistical analysis showed that the garlic concentrations have same effect on chromosome condensation formation. Results imply that the garlic extract does not have significant cytogenetic effects on human leukocytes.
