Abstract

PANISAN, MA. KATRINA ALTOBAR. 2004. COMPARATIVE KARYOTYPES OF TWO PHILIPPINE NATIVE ORCHIDS, PHALAENOPSIS SCHILLERIANA REICHB.F. and POMATOCALPA BICOLOR LINDL. University of the Philippines Los Banos. B.S. Biology major in Genetics. Major Adviser: Prof. Celia B. dela Viña ABSTRACT Chromosome behavior in mitosis, chromosome number and chromosome characteristics were determined in two Philippine native orchids namely Phalaenopsis schilleriana Reichb.f and Pontatocalpa bicolor Lindl. Normal mitosis was observed in root tip squashes of the two species. Mitotic index was high at 66.15% in P. schilleriana and 73.3% in P. bicolor. Based on the karyotypes, the two species have a diploid chromosome number of 2n=38. The chromosomes were short with mean relative lengths ranging from 0.037 to 0.073 in P. schilleriana and from 0.039 to 0.069 in P. bicolor. The arm ratio ranged from 1.00 to 3.00 in both species. Centromere positions were median sense stricto, median and submedian. Chromosome pairs 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9 were metacentric (M and m) and pairs 7, 13, 14, 15, and 19 were submetacentric for both species. In P. schilleriana, chromosome pairs 2, 4, and 16 were metacentric (M and m) and pairs 8, 10, 11, 12, 17, and 18 were submetacentric. In P. bicolor, chromosome pairs 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18 were metacentric (M and m) and pair 2 is submetacentric.
