Abstract
The banding patterns of the total leaf proteins of 26 pili, Canarium ovatum (Engl) accessions collected from the germplasm collections of the National Plant Genetics Resources Laboratory, Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, Laguna were investigated using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis. A maximum number of 9 bands were visualized and 15 banding patterns were identified in the gels. Samples from Camarines Sur exhibited 9 banding patterns, with 4 samples sharing the same banding patterns (BPI), while samples from Albay exhibited 2 banding patterns, with 2 samples sharing the same banding patterns (BP4). The few banding patterns in Camarines Sur and Albay are indicative of a high similarity within the two localities. The average similarity index, based on the banding patterns is 76.64% for all the samples. 81.68% within Camarines Sur, and 81.94% within Albay samples indicating that there were no significant differences within samples coming from the same licality as well as among the samples from different localities. Similarity index between Albay and Camarines samples is 48.45%, indicating a high genetic diversity between the two populations, which could be attributed to be limited exchange of genetic materials between them. Samples of unknown origin 7371, 7374, 7363, 7372 and 7361 were clustered with Camarines Sur samples. while samples 7386 and 7376 were clusteres indipendently, but near Albay samples, suggesting a possible place of origin for the given unknown occassions.
