Abstract

PERALTA. MICHAELLE ANGELA ALCANTARA. 2003. COMPARATIVE KARYOTYPES OF TWO PHILIPPINE NATIVE ORCHIDS, RENANTIIERA MATUTINA Lindl. and R. MONACMCA Ames. University of the Philippines, Los Banos. B.S. Biology major in genetics. Major Adviser: Prof. Celia B. dela Vina ABSTRACT Chromosome behavior in mitosis, chromosome number and chromosome characteristics were determined in two Philippine native orchids, namely Renanthera matutina Lindl. and R. monachica Ames. Normal mitosis was observed in root tip squashes of each Renanthera species. Mitotic index was low at 7.39% in R. matutina and 7.54% in R. monachica. Karyotypes of prometaphase cells revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=38 . Chromosomes were short with mean relative lengths ranging from 0.034 to o.074 in R. matutina and 0.034 to 0.076 in R monachica. Based on the position of the centromere, chromosome types were either metacentric or submetacentric. Chromosomes 5 and 12 are metacentric while chromosomes 2,6,9,10,11,13,15, 16,18 and 19 are submetacentric in both Renanthera species.
