Abstract

Populations of fruitflies were sampled at Tanauan, Batangas and at Umali Subdivision, Los Banos, Laguna. Identification of the flies, particularly of the morphological characteristic such as the male sex comb revealed that the species were Drosophila melanogaster. Five concentrations of malunggay leaf extract (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %)were introduced to the diet of D. melanogaster. This was done to determine the different cytogenetic effects of malunggay leaf extract on the saliva!)• gland chromosomes of D. melanogaster. Lacto-aceto-orcein squash technique was applied to the salivary gland excised from the thirst instar larvae. The preparations showed inversions and chromosomal breaks. Highest frequency of both inversion and chromosomal break were counted in the 100% treatment. Using the Kruskal-Wallis Test, M. oleifera was to have significant effects on the inversion frequency but insignificant on the chromosomal break frequency. Pairwise comparison of the individual treatments for the inversion was done using the Mann-Whitney U Test. All of the treatments were significantly different from the control. Treatments 25 and 50% have effects that are not significantly different from each other. The same was true for the 75 and 100% treatments, their effects do not vary significantly. On the other hand, treatments 50 and 75% have effects that are significantly different from each other. It can be said that he effects of treatments 25 and 50% and that of 75 and 100% treatments are significantly different. Twenty five percent is the lowest concentration of the extract that could cause aberration on the salivary gland chromosomes of D. melanogaster.
