Abstract

This study assessed the factors affecting the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector in General Trias, Cavite. Specifically, this study determined the direction and estimated the effect of socio-demographic and job risk factors on the hours spent of the informal waste recycling sector on waste recycling activities as well as to provide a profile of the waste recycling pickers based on the said factors. The study utilized primary data obtained through printed survey questionnaires distributed to 180 waste recycling pickers in General Trias, Cavite. The use of Multiple Linear Regression allowed multiple variables to be tested in relation to determining the factors significantly affecting the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector. The analysis revealed that individuals with larger household sizes and higher average daily income work for longer hours regardless of their sex, age, marital status, years of schooling, duration of employment , and perception of risk. Similar to past studies, Household Size and Average Daily Income positively affects the hours spent on work in the informal waste recycling sector, and this is true with the sample, as both are significant demographic factors. The pandemic-related factors related to the working status may have also played a crucial role in making other factors non-significant in the study. Nevertheless, as the findings of this study agrees that there are prevailing factors that influence the hours spent on work of the informal waste recycling sector in General Trias, Cavite, and as well as an increase in the number of waste pickers, it is suggested that the local government unit should create better programs to cater the livelihood needs, educational and health programs of the informal waste sector of the city.
