Abstract

This study established the effect of education on the fertility behavior of households in San Mateo, Rizal. Furthermore, it determined the relationship between education and household fertility decisions and analyzed other socio-demographic factors that could affect the fertility decisions of households. This study used an ordinary least squares regression model adopted from the socio-economic study of Srivastava (1999). Pairwise correlation analysis was made to establish the link between education and other socio- economic variables to the number of children born in the household. Finally, a description of the respondents and population control programs in San Mateo, Rizal was made.

The study found that, though it did not appear to be significant, there is a negative relationship between education and total number of children born in the household. The marrying age of the wife also has a negative relationship with respect to the number of children. The variable for the use of family planning and the current age of the women has also emerged as significant and was found to affect the number of children positively.

It was revealed that the Super Health Center in San Mateo provides health care and family planning services for the residents of the municipality. Their population control services include: distribution of free or discounted contraceptive products and pre-natal and post-natal consultation services and medications, follow-ups, and house-to-house motivation on family planning.
