Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the preference and buying behavior for salt among consumers in Mindanao. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) characterize the buyers of salt in selected households in Mindanao; 2) assess buyers’ level of knowledge and awareness on different types of salt; nutritional properties, health benefits of iodized salt, and ASIN Law among households; 3) identify the attributes of salt sought by buyers; and 4) establish the purchasing behavior for salt.
Ninety-two respondents were purposively selected. Descriptive analysis was used to determine and describe the socio-economic characteristics, product knowledge and awareness, buying behavior, and preference of household consumers using averages, frequency counts, and percentages. Due to nature of the dataset only crosstabulation coupled with descriptive analysis was performed to show the pattern of relationship among attributes consumers preferred when buying salt and their different socio-economic characteristics.
It was found out that a large proportion of the respondents obtained satisfactory and poor knowledge scores and that only 47 percent of them were aware of ASIN Law. Color, texture, and purity were the top three attributes of salt most preferred by consumers.
Recommendations include: improvement in data collection, improvement in salt attributes to conform with the preference of consumers, and review and revisit of the ASIN Law and its implementation.
