Abstract

The study measured the area response of white corn in the Philippines. Specifically, it analyzed the trend in production, area and yield of white corn at the national and regional levels, determined the factors affecting area devoted to white corn, identified problems related to areas devoted to white corn and provided recommendations.

The study utilized secondary data obtained from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). These were the time-series data on production, area, yield and own prices of yellow corn and white corn and the prices of fertilizer and wage rate for corn farmers from 1990 to 2018 for national level and 2001 to 2018 for regional level.

The trend analysis results showed that production and area for white corn were declining while for yellow corn they were on an upward trend. The results of the regression analysis revealed that at the national level all factors, which were own price of white corn, price of yellow corn, prices of complete and urea fertilizers, wage rate and Agri-Pinoy Corn Program, significantly affect area, these factors attribute to the decrease in area for white corn production, except for own price and complete fertilizer. At the regional level, not all factors were significant and not all responded to the hypothesized results, specifically the price of the complete and urea fertilizers, wage rate and the Agri-Pinoy Corn Program, this was due to the unique characteristics of the region and their usage for white corn.

The study recommended that the government should improve the input subsidies they provide to farmers since price of inputs are significant and acquiring this would help in the intended area of expansion for white corn. In addition, the institution of programs that would keep prices of white corn and yellow corn to minimum possible levels, the study showed that increase in price of white corn decrease the demand for white corn and lastly, continue to promote the consumption of white corn since white corn is a substitute of rice, which can decrease the rice related problems of the country.
