Abstract
This study attempted to assess the savings and investment and their effects on credit availment of smallholder fruit-based mountain farmers in Barangay Atisan, San Pablo City. Specifically, the study aimed to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, determine the amounts of savings, investment, and credit of the farmers; determine the relationships (i.e. positive or negative relationship) that exist among the savings, investment, and credit availment of the farmers and their corresponding socio- economic determinants; and identify the saving motivations, investment forms, and credit purposes of the farmers.
Using primary and secondary data from the smallholder fruit-based mountain farmers and the City Agricultural Office (CAO) and City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) of San Pablo City, an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation was conducted to identify the determinants of the savings, investment, and credit availment of the farmers. Results showed that farm income, non-farm income, and farm size positively affect the savings of the farmers; farm size and savings affect the investment of the farmers negatively and positively, respectively; and that there is no sufficient empirical evidence that establishes the effects of savings and investment on credit availment of the farmers.
Catering for emergencies, future consumption, farm expenditure, interest incentive, and emergency interest incentive are saving motivations for a majority of the smallholder fruit-based mountain farmers. Machinery/tools, a farm asset, is a form of investment for a majority of the farmers. Finally, farm expenditure, food, clothing, utilities, education- related spending, and health spending are credit purposes for only a minority of the farmers.
