Abstract

This research activity analyzed the supply of pork in the Philippines from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that hog inventory in the Philippines had a generally increasing trend, while the volume of pork production in the country had an increasing trend. The top pork-producing region was Central Luzon. In terms of the number of hogs slaughtered, CALABARZON was the top-performing region. Western Visayas had the largest backyard hog inventory, while Central Luzon had the largest commercial hog inventory. Pork imports, farmgate price of pork, farmgate price of broiler chicken, and farmgate price of yellow corn showed increasing trends. Further, results also showed that temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall were in an increasing trend.

Based on the results of the regression analysis, temperature, relative humidity, and price of broiler chicken were statistically significant factors that affect the supply of pork. On the other hand, rainfall, farmgate price of pork, and lagged price of pork were not statistically significant factors affecting pork supply. Temperature and relative humidity exhibited a negative relationship with the supply of pork, while farmgate price of broiler chicken showed a positive relationship with the supply of pork in the Philippines.

The study recommended that the national government should partner with the private sector and financial institutions to create equitable loan programs that would enable hog raisers to purchase such equipment and still earn profit in the production process. The government should also formulate policies to encourage potential participants to invest in the Philippine hog industry, and also expand the use of contract swine farming to decrease investment costs by hog raisers. Lastly, this study recommended that government agencies should provide seminars on how hog raisers can process their pork into other high value processed products and how to handle the African Swine Fever to minimize production losses.
