Abstract

In the Philippines, duck farming is profitable considering its low input costs and high market prices (Chang, et al, 2003). However, the mobility restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the duck industry as reflected in the decline in its supply and demand. The duck farmers were challenged to sustain the profitability of the industry which mainly stemmed from the crisis which affected different duck farm operations. There is a perceived need for higher savings during the pandemic as the households' livelihood activities were restricted, affecting their income level. Ultimately, reduced income decreases the savings capacity of the household which consequently serves as threat to their financial stability and security. The study analyzed the savings behavior of the duck farming households in Victoria, Laguna before and during COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 41 duck farming households with 14 backyards raisers, three commercial raisers, 11 processors, and 13 farmer-processors were interviewed regarding their savings behavior and income and expenditure patterns from 2019-2020. To achieve the objectives of the study, descriptive analysis, cost and returns analysis, cash flow budgeting, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Fisher's exact test were used as analytical methods.
